Safwan Malasalih is an Iraqi Linguistics Scholar and Research Fellow at the Center for International Development. Safwan received his B.A. in Linguistics, Translation and Inter-Cultural Studies in 1998 from the University of Mosul in Iraq, and pursued an M.A. in the same field in 2000. He received a Fulbright scholarship to study at the University of Arizona in 2011 and began working on his Ph.D. in Translation and Intercultural Studies in 2014.

Prior to arriving at CID, Safwan worked as a professor at the University of Mosul. Safwan is an avid believer in change and progress, and was one of the first residents to seek opportunities to bring democracy and prosperity to his community. Fervor and dedication to bring about peace and prosperity to his country were pivotal in driving his efforts towards exploring international development venues. In 2009, he was connected with the American Provincial Reconstruction Teams in Iraq and worked with them to bring several projects to the University of Mosul, including a TOEFL testing center and American Corner, a space that provides public programming in English language learning, educational advising, cultural programs, and information about the United States. American Corner became his next passion, and he proceeded to run the facility in conjunction with the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad for three years.

As a child growing up in Mosul, Iraq, Safwan had a passion for learning more about the world beyond the hills that he saw every day from the roof of his house. He developed a yearning for knowledge and a broad array of interests including languages, history, and geography. Due to recent unforeseen and unpleasant developments in Iraq in general, and Mosul city in particular, Safwan was impelled to leave his hometown and country and move to the United States in 2014. Safwan currently lives in Muncie, Indiana with his wife and three children. He likes reading, table-tennis, soccer and long walks.
