Career Exploration

  • Take the FOCUS II.
  • Go to: Create a username and password. Enter the access code: cards.
  • Complete the “Career Readiness” section, take the “Self Assessments”, “Explore the Possibilities”, review and print “Your Portfolio”.
  • Meet with your academic advisor. Go to AdvisorTrac in MyBSU to schedule an advising appointment.
  • Meet with a Career Counselor in the Counseling Center in LU 320. Call 765-285-1736 to schedule an appointment.
  • Take a career exploration course (ID 101). Ask your advisor for details.

Major/Career Research

  • Visit the Career Center website and click the “What can I do with a major in...?” link:
  • Click on the majors that interest you and the career titles that interest you.
  • Review the information detailing what the type of work that you would do, the work environment, how to pursue that profession, salary information, job outlook, and similar occupations.
  • Visit the Department Website: Find out more about the major and career opportunities.
  • Visit the online Ball State Undergraduate Catalog. Review the major requirements and course descriptions for that major.
  • Visit the Career Center in LU 220. This office provides print and electronic resources on career options and trends.
  • Contact Senior VIPs (very informed persons). These are Ball State juniors and seniors who represent their major and can give the student perspective about the major(s) in which you are interested. VIP contact information is available from your advisor.

Career Experience

  • Take an introductory course in major(s) of interest. Talk with your advisor for options.
  • Join a student organization related to specific major(s). Refer to Benny Link for a list of organizations.
  • Find volunteer opportunities through Student Voluntary Services.
  • Find part-time jobs, full-time jobs, or internships related to that major through Career Link.
  • Job shadow a professional in that field.
