Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) was passed by Congress in 1974. This law grants rights to students who are currently enrolled or formerly enrolled, regardless of their age, to the following:

  • the right to see the information that Ball State has concerning a student
  • the right to seek to amend those records and, in certain cases, append a statement to the record
  • the right to consent to disclosure of his or her records
  • the right to file a complaint with the Department of Education Compliance Office in Washington DC
