Learn to Swim

Learn to Swim teaches children everything from just being comfortable in the water, floating, coordinating arm and leg movements to learning proper breathing, the different competitive strokes, and diving (ages 6 months to 13). Pick a date and a time at your leisure—and come prepared to learn. Parents are encouraged to register for either Tuesday or Saturday lessons at the designated times.

  • Tuesdays: 5:30-6:10 p.m. or 6:20-7 p.m.
  • Sundays: 2:00-2:40 p.m. or 2:50-3:30 p.m.

Steps to Sign up for Learn to Swim

  1. Visit https://recreation.bsu.edu/ to log into your new Recreation Services Membership Portal.
  2. Sign into your account using your BSU information by selecting "Sign in with BSU Username and Password".
  3. Once logged in, select “Programs and Registrations” from the options below.  Select “Learn to Swim” from a list of options.
  4. Complete the payment process with credit card.

For those who do not have a BSU log-in, register for your guest profile by selecting “Sign Up” 
located in the top right corner. Follow the steps to create a profile and verify your account.

Swim Test Day

Swim Test Day is only intended for children who plan on being enrolled in our swim lessons. This allows the children to be placed in the most appropriate level prior to the first official day of the program. Attendees must indicate their desire to test when signing up for learn to swim.

Class Descriptions

The P-TOT class helps children feel comfortable in the water while with their parent or guardian.

Lessons include:

  • water adjustment
  • supported front and back float
  • jumping from the side of pool to parent
  • passing
  • blowing bubbles
  • towing
  • safety and awareness skills
  • interaction with children
  • songs and games

The Pollywog class is designed for children who have already participated in the PTOT level and feel comfortable swimming without a parent in the water, but who are not quite ready to advance to Level 1, generally because of their younger age.

The goal of this level is to provide a smooth transition from PTOT to Level 1.

Lessons include:

  • water adjustment
  • supported front and back float
  • jumping from side of pool to instructor
  • passing
  • blowing bubbles
  • towing
  • safety awareness/skills
  • interaction with children
  • songs and games
The Level 1 class helps children feel comfortable in the water without parent assistance. The class continues to work with children becoming comfortable in the water, learn front and back floating with an introduction to gliding, submerging underwater, and safety awareness/skills. Other skills taught include entering and exiting the water, and supported front and back kicking.
The Level 2 class is designed for children who feel comfortable in the water and can front and back float and kick using a kickboard. Front and back glides will be refined. Introduction to back crawl, front crawl, rhythmic breathing, elementary backstroke, sitting dives, and safety awareness/skills.
The Level 3 class is designed for children who feel comfortable in the water and can front and back float and kick using a kickboard. Front and back glides will be refined. Introduction to back crawl, front crawl, rhythmic breathing, elementary backstroke, sitting dives, and safety awareness/skills.
The Level 4 class is designed for children to refine elementary backstroke, diving, treading water, surface dives and front and back crawl. The class also introduces the breaststroke, butterfly, sidestroke, survival floating, turns, and safety awareness/skills.
The Level 5 class is designed for children who are comfortable with the front and back crawl, treading water, elementary backstroke and diving. Students will learn stroke technique and mechanics. Refinement of butterfly, sidestroke, breaststroke, and turns will also be perfected. Introduction to lifesaving techniques and safety awareness/skills will be taught.

Sitting at home bored with the kids? Let Recreation Services be the cure to your blues. Come in and swim. The best part is it won't cost you a thing to splash and swim around. Family Swim is a free time for you and your family to spend some quality time playing in the pool. We provide a safe environment with lifeguards on-duty.
