ZOOM ROOM 1

12:30-1:30 p.m. - Equity Through Accessibility, Keynote by Courtney Sobers

Equity must include accessibility. Accessibility is not only accommodations for disabilities but also access to support, resources, and time. Accessibility-first approaches, such as Universal Design for Learning, are meant to be a starting point for addressing the equity gap. But where do you go from there? What do you do if you don't teach a lecture style course? What if you have more of a managerial role in your course? Courtney J. Sobers, PhD, an associate teaching professor, will walk you through her alternative grading journey, encourage you to reflect on the alignment of your boundaries and teaching practices, and the hard truths she's realized about equity in college teaching.

About the Summit

Ball State University's Division of Online and Strategic Learning, Office of Inclusive Excellence, and Office of the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs are pleased to announce the 2024 Provost's Faculty Summit: Minding the Equity Gap taking place virtually February 15 and 16, 2024.

This year’s summit has been expanded to include sessions otherwise offered during the Assurance of Learning Day, hosted by Ball State University. We are excited to combine the Provost's Faculty Summit and Assurance of Learning Day into one premier professional development opportunity for Ball State University community members and beyond.

The planning committee will continue to utilize this live summit landing page to share the emerging summit schedule, resources, and more.

Here's what last year’s attendees had to say

The summit overall was excellent. I got a lot out of several sessions. Thank you for the effort that went into planning this - I know it was a lot of work!”

“Enjoyed the break-up of sessions over two days. Thought-provoking keynote. Easy to navigate.”

“PLEASE do this again soon. I think the approach has real merit. Your planning team did a stellar job of hosting, facilitating, and supporting. Do it again!”

“As a graduate student, the presentations of other graduate students inspired me the most. Thank you!

"Equity Through Accessibility"

Courtney J. Sobers

Courtney J. Sobers, an associate teaching professor in the Chemistry department at Rutgers-Newark, teaches medium introductory lab and lecture courses. Her teaching and mentoring practices center student learning and engagement through a lens of accessibility, inclusion, and equity.

Courtney J. Sobers, PhD, started her career as a full-time collegiate educator in 2014 and is currently an Associate Teaching Professor in the chemistry department at Rutgers-Newark in Newark, New Jersey. Her primary teaching responsibilities include sequenced introductory chemistry courses with 100-450 enrolled students in collaboration with ~35 teaching assistants.

As an educator, Courtney prioritizes creating courses that are welcoming to historically neglected students, including disabled students and formerly incarcerated students. To that end, Dr. Sobers ventured into the world of alternative grading, specifically collaborative grading (ungrading) and specifications grading, in large and/or non-lecture style courses.

Courtney also focuses on the mentoring and training of student Teaching Assistants (TAs) that provide necessary support for these courses, with an emphasis on creating a learning environment that celebrates diversity.

Most importantly, Dr. Sobers is unafraid to show the good, the bad, and the ugly of addressing accessibility and equity issues using adapted evidence-informed practices. She can be found publicly documenting her experiences, and discussing practical ways to start “Minding the Equity Gap”, on various social media.
