2021 Spring Graduates

In accordance with state and local guidelines, Ball State University will hold a series of smaller, outdoor Commencement ceremonies for all of our Spring 2021 graduates on Friday, May 7, and Saturday, May 8. All ceremonies will be held outdoors at Scheumann Stadium, rain or shine. These ceremonies have been organized by college to allow us to abide by necessary physical distancing.

The order of ceremonies will be as follows:

Friday, May 7 (Doctoral, Specialist, and Master’s candidates)

  • Graduate School, 7 p.m.

Saturday, May 8 (Bachelor’s and Associate candidates)

  • R. Wayne Estopinal College of Architecture and Planning; College of Communication, Information, and Media; Teachers College, 8 a.m.
  • Miller College of Business, Noon
  • College of Fine Arts and College of Health, 4 p.m.
  • College of Sciences and Humanities, 8 p.m.

Graduates who wish to participate in Commencement must register on the Ball State Commencement website on or before March 29. Each graduate who registers will receive four complimentary guest tickets (no exceptions can be made for additional tickets). All ceremonies will be livestreamed and available on the Commencement website. All graduates and attendees of our Spring Commencement exercises will be required to wear masks.

Yes. The registration form for in-person participation in Commencement is now available. Graduates will need to submit this form to declare their intent to participate by the end of the day on Monday, March 29. Please note the registration form should be completed in addition to completing the official application to graduate via Self-Service Banner. The undergraduate application is due Monday, March 22.

Due to COVID capacity restrictions in the state of Indiana and Delaware County, we will be ticketing all Commencement ceremonies on May 7 and 8. All graduates who have registered to attend the Spring 2021 Commencement Ceremonies will receive a graduate ticket and four guest tickets (no exceptions can be made for additional tickets). Tickets will be available for pick-up in the lobby of Emens Auditorium (1800 W Riverside Ave, Muncie, IN 47306) at the following dates and times:

  • Thursday, April 22, 2021 – 2:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
  • Friday, April 23, 2021 – 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

An ID (driver’s license, state-issued identification card, or Ball State ID) will be required to pick up your tickets. If you are not able to pick up your tickets during these times, and someone will be picking them up on your behalf, please notify the Commencement Office by emailing Any other inquiries regarding ticket pick-up should be directed to the or by phone at 765-285-1686.

No. All guest tickets will be assigned seating to accommodate proper physical distancing. We encourage your four guests to be from the same household or within the same social bubble, so they are comfortable sitting together.

Cap and gown packages can be ordered online via the Commencement website. The last day to order to pick up your package at the Ball State Bookstore is Monday, March 22. Graduates who select this option will be notified of the pick-up dates at a later date.

The deadline to order online and have your package shipped to you is Saturday, April 24.

Yes. All ceremonies will be livestreamed and available on the Commencement website.

Please note Ball State University is not offering a virtual option for graduates to participate in the commencement ceremonies.

Yes. As long as you complete the in-person registration form by Monday, March 29, your name will be read as you cross the stage at your Commencement ceremony. When you arrive, there will be a name card and pencil preset at your chair. You will need to complete the card with how you would like your name to be pronounced when it is your turn to cross the stage.

Diplomas for master's, bachelor's, and associate degrees will be mailed approximately four to eight weeks after Commencement to the address listed in the graduation application.

Doctoral diplomas will be distributed at the Graduate School ceremony on Friday, May 7.

All Graduate School students (master’s, doctoral, and specialist candidates) should attend the Graduate School ceremony on Friday, May 7, at 7:00 p.m. Due to COVID capacity restrictions, college ceremonies will only be for undergraduates.

Eligible undergraduate students will be contacted by the Registrar’s Office in April regarding pick-up options to obtain their honors medallion. Your Ball State grade point average must be:

  • 3.6 to 3.799 for cum laude
  • 3.8 to 3.899 for magna cum laude
  • 3.9 to 4.0 for summa cum laude

Honors College graduates will receive their red and white honors cords at the Honors College Recognition ceremony on Sunday, April 25. Honors College cords will also be available for pickup at the Ball Honors House between Thursday, April 15, and Friday, May 7, or they can be shipped to you.

Yes, as long as the decorations are not inappropriate or distracting to others in attendance.
Masks will be required for all attendees, including graduates. In addition, seating for graduates and guests will follow physical distancing guidelines, and the venue will be sanitized between each ceremony. Hand sanitation stations will be available throughout the venue.
To avoid damaging the football field and to prevent potential injury, graduates will be required to wear flat-soled shoes to participate in Commencement. Examples of flat-soled shoes that will be permitted include espadrilles, loafers, ballet flats, mules, oxfords, wedges, sneakers, slide sandals, gladiator sandals, etc.

Parking will be available for graduates and guests in the lots adjacent to Scheumann Stadium. Scheumann Stadium is located at 3300 Tillotson Ave., Muncie, IN 47304.
Yes. If you are not able to attend the Spring 2021 Commencement but would still like a printed program shipped to you, please complete this form. Printed programs will be shipped out in mid to late May.
