Dear Parent or Guardian,

The AATG (American Association of Teachers of German) National German Exam for High School Students is administered every year to high school German students in levels II through V.  This exam consists of 100 multiple choice questions and tests the individual student’s listening, grammar, and reading skills.

This test is an excellent diagnostic tool that provides vital information on comparing the students here at ________ High School with students across the state of Indiana and the nation.  It allows the high school German teacher to receive the base line data necessary to assess what is being accomplished in German classes at __________ High School, as well as what we need to do to improve as a department.

This test is also very beneficial to your son or daughter as a German student.  First of all, it helps individuals to receive the necessary practice in order to do well on other standardized tests that are required at universities and colleges, such as at the SAT II Subject Test, the AP Test, the IB Exam and university/college specific entrance exams.  Taking this test, which has once again been placed on the NASSP (National Association of Secondary School Principals) Advisory List of National Contests and Activities, also looks great on college applications and resumes.  In addition, students who place in the 70th percentile or above will receive certificates of accomplishment along with various prizes which have included books, special medals, T-shirts, savings bonds and cash.  Finally, students who score in the top 90th percentile, have a cumulative 3.0 GPA,  and are at least 16 years of age by Dec. 31, 2008 can win the AATG/PAD (Pädagogischer Austauschdienst) Study Trip Award. This award pays for students to live, attend classes, and participate in excursions in Germany for 3-4 weeks in the summer.

The cost for your child to participate in this test is $5 and the test will be administered during SRT or during his/her German class, depending on the level of German in which your child is currently enrolled.  Please take a moment to fill out the form on the back of this letter and have your child return it to his/her German teacher no later than ____________.

Thank you very much for your assistance.
