The Indiana AATG Spring Immersion 2009 will take place on April 24th-25st, 2009 in Bloomington, Indiana and is entitled “Deutschland in Europa: Teaching German, Teaching Europe”. This immersion is designed to further participants understanding of the impact of the Europeanization process in Central Europe by providing current information on cultural, economic, political, social, and academic developments in Germany through a presentation on day 1 entitled “Das Werden und Wesen der EU” (Friday evening) and a workshop on day 2 on “Deutschland und die EU im Deutschunterricht: Pädagogische Ansätze” (Saturday morning).  Both the presentation and the workshop are given by James C. Davidheiser, AATG Consultant, Professor and Chair of the German Department at the University of the South.

Jim Davidheiser has often received commendations for his work, including recognition from the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG) and the Federation of German-American Clubs. He has also hosted two state German contests and festivals for students and five Goethe-Institute workshops for Tennessee faculty. He has served professional organizations as the Southeast representative to the AATG's executive council, was president of TFLTA, and twice president of the Tennessee AATG and its treasurer for a decade.  He has made 90 public presentations and has written over 30 articles on language, literature and culture throughout his career.

After dinner and the presentation on Friday evening, we will have a “geselliges Zusammensein”.  On day 2 (Saturday morning) teachers will participate in a variety of sample lessons and will be introduced to a number of strategies for introducing a European perspective into teaching. Our presenter will share classroom activities along with prepared teaching modules and materials. In addition, participants will be provided with resources and classroom-ready teaching materials.

Please join us in April to reconnect with colleagues, to meet new colleagues, to be immersed in German, and to learn more about Germany’s role in Europe and the integration of lessons on European culture into German language instruction at all levels! If you have any questions, feel free to contact Dine Möller-Sahling at moeller@usi.edu.
