Application of radiant heat

When the ancient Roman's heated their baths, they did so by pulling heat through a subfloor, which heated the above floor and thus the water on it.  A modern day application of this would be a system which heated floors of a house.  An heating unit positioned on the outside of a house would heat up due to the sun, much like a greenhouse.  The heat would then be pulled through a horizontal chimney between floors of the house.  Radiant heat would heat the floor of the above room and any excess heat would simply escape out the other end of the chimney. A system such as this would have to be used in conjuction with other energy producing methods, but would be a great aid in energy and specifically heat production.
