By the People Convenes National Deliberation Week

WIPB gathered 36 citizen representatives of the Delaware County community to discuss healthcare at a Citizen Deliberation on October 29, 2005 at Minnetrista Cultural Center.  This event was part of a national Deliberation Week, when nearly 1000 Americans in 16 cities across the country participated in Citizen Deliberations to discuss one of two critically important issues facing the nation:  healthcare or education. 

WIPB’s Deliberation Week dialogue centered on individual wellness and building a healthy community as it relates to larger healthcare issues.  The dialogue also included discussions about the role of government versus the role of the individual citizen in addressing healthcare on a national and local level.  WIPB’s participants were invited through a random selection process. 

Excerpts of local discussions from the Citizen Deliberations will be included in By the People, a national program that will air on PBS on Thursday, November 10 at 9:00pm. The one-hour special will be anchored by Ray Suarez, senior correspondent from PBS’s The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. WIPB will produce a half-hour special about the Citizen Deliberation, airing at 8:30pm, immediately before the national program.
