· Attention grabber: Rearrange the room by putting the single desk
into groups
to enhance communication, at the end of class ask the students if they
know
why you did this.
· Methods:
o Power point - (see presentation)
o Empty chair dialogue: demonstrates verbal communication
§ It’s Monday morning and there is just about five minutes until the
first bell rings to begin school. Your best friend is standing at
your locker talking to you about what you did this past weekend.
Let us hear your conversation starting with Friday night’s ballgame
(football, basketball, or baseball).
§ You’re at the dinner table with your parents. They begin to
talk of
how it will only be one short year and you will be in college. You
soon find yourself in a discussion about the major you have chosen
to pursue and the college you would like to attend. Let us hear
what your plans are and how your parents will react.
o Radioscopic devices: demonstrates non-verbal communication
§ Gather pictures from magazines that show gestures or have
explainable non-verbal signs in them.
Tuesday
· Attention grabber: I will read a passage at the beginning of class.
After
finished I will continue on with the course work. Once we are finished
with class I will ask the students questions regarding the passage that
I
read at the beginning of class. This will give the students an idea
of how
much they actually listen when some one is speaking to them.
· Methods:
o Listening Teams
o Give the students a piece of paper that says active or passive.
When asked a question they will need to respond by acting
out their listening skills in the form that is stated on their paper.
o Game
§ Have the first student say one word, the next person says the
word the first person said and another word, repeat the process
until you come back around to the first person. This game makes
the children have to really focus on the game and listen carefully.
Wednesday
· Attention grabber: When starting class I will fidget; not
make eye contact
with the students; have my back turned to them; and talk really fast
and
unclear. After about five minutes of demonstrating the importance
of
speaking skills we will begin to discuss how this isn’t an effective way
of communication.
· Methods:
o Interview
§ I will invite a professional that works in personal to come in
and talk about interviews and their importance in getting a
job. I will also ask the speaker to speak on topics such as dress,
jewelry, resume, and sitting proper.
o Buzz Groups
o Video
§ I will have the students watch a professional speaker on
video such as one of Martin Luther King, Jr. speeches.
Thursday
· Attention grabber: I will begin class by not speaking. Either
I will be
writing everything on the board or putting it up on the overhead, this
will display a few methods of written communication to the students
· Methods:
o Written Instructions
§ I will hand them a worksheet that they need to complete
without giving verbal instructions.
o Journal entry
§ We will talk about the importance of keeping a journal.
This day we will then start to write in our journals till the
end of the semester.
o Game
§ The students will need to take out a piece of notebook paper
and identify as many forms of written communication as they can.
The student/s with the most will receive either bonus points or prize.
Friday
· Attention grabber: I will have a list of words on the board
that are spelled
differently but could have the same meaning if not used in proper context.
(ex. two, too and sea, see) We would then discuss the problems in
communication including words that have one meaning in our culture and
another in a different culture.
· Methods:
o Lecture (see notes)
o Sociodrama
o Prepared materials
