President:
Sean Northup
My name is Sean Northup, and I am running for the office of SPA President. For the past two years, I have been very active in SPA – this year, as American Planning Association (APA) Representative, I have taken the lead in planning our April trip to the APA National Conference in San Antonio. Since freshmen year, I have found myself working in numerous leadership roles, including being elected as Co-Chair of my residence hall, serving in the Residence Hall Association (RHA), sitting on the Student Senate in the Student Government Association (SGA), and most recently working as SPA’s APA Rep this past year.
Like many Ball State planning students, I am very enthusiastic about my course of study. I spend the majority of my “free time” working for Community-Based Projects (CBP), doing real-world planning work for many different cities. This summer, I will be interning at Birchler-Arroyo, a consulting firm in Detroit.
In addition to being a SPA member for the past two years, I have made an effort to follow other Planning Student Organizations (PSOs) online. As SPA President, I would build on the progress that we have made and try to incorporate new ideas from other schools to improve our organization. In response to my ranger-addicted opponents, I do not pour toxic waste, eat babies, or, worse yet, advocate sprawl. However, I do get more than my fill of SimCity 4, and I could easily rout my two-headed, fire-breathing opponent in fake, Maxis-run planning any day of the week. I know exactly what not to do… I am from Detroit, after all. That logic, I fear, is truly undeniable.
Joe White/Scott Curry
The ancient Greek philosopher Plato was perhaps the most outspoken early advocate for “rule of the people.” And when considering your options for next year’s SPA president you can’t find a more representative candidacy than Scott Curry and Joe White. What could be a more effective rule of the people than a dual-candidacy leading in the office of SPA President? If you took the time to read Plato’s Republic, we’re sure you’d agree.
Scott and Joe are well-respected among their faculty and studio peers and would love the chance to earn your respect as well in a leadership capacity as Co-Presidents of your Student Planning Association. A vote for Scott and Joe is a vote for the best qualities of two excellent emerging professionals. Imagine a leading presence that combines the rugged good-looks and patent charm of Joseph Ryan Canisius White and the shear height and splendor of Scott Demetrius Porter Curry. Any decent fan of the Power Rangers knows that the only way to beat Zordon’s plasma wave of destruction is to join forces and transform into a super-morphin Mega-Ranger. Let Scott and Joe be this Mega-Ranger for you. If Scott and Joe can be even half as cool as the Power Rangers, then you can expect a better, more stylish, more kick-ass SPA next year. Scott and Joe will fight for your interests, and not like diplomacy and petitions kind of fighting, more like Chuck Norris roundhouse kicks to the face fighting. This logic is undeniable, and if you can’t see that, then you’re most likely a baby eating, kitten killing, toxic waste dumping, advocate of urban sprawl, just like Sean “Unsustainable” Northup. And, if this is the case we don’t want your vote anyway because you make us sick.
If you only make one decision for the rest of your life, vote for Scott and Joe.
Scott Curry and Joe White…Our Logic Is Undeniable!
Vice-President:
Brandon Winter
As a first year member of SPA, I've tried to take advantage of all opportunities that this association has to offer. And by running for Treasurer and/or Vice President, I hope to continue helping to provide members with more of the same, if not better, programs and events. This past year, I've served on the Fundraising Committee and become involved in other volunteer events and activities such as the fall field trip planning committee. A vote for me provides this organization with yet another up-and-coming professional to help support and direct SPA towards its best year to date. Vote for Brandon for your new Treasurer and/or Vice President the in SPA elections on April 13th, 14th, and 17th!

As SPA’s VP, I would do everything in my power to assist the president and promote the organization’s agenda. I would gladly assist in any capacity that I am asked to, including taking the lead on unpopular or neglected issues.
