During Reading...
Activity #1
Think back about the questions you answered
during the "Before Reading..." activity (#2). Are they correct
so far? When you come to Part II of the novel, think about whether you would
answer those questions differently now than you did before you began reading
this novel. Click
here for the chance to revise your predictions!
Activity #2
At one point in the novel (during Part II--Miyax, the girl), a strange thing happens in January to the sky. The book says that "the top of the world began to glow like an eclipse" (page 100). Click here to discover more about auroras through pictures and descriptions. When you have looked at the pictures and read through the site, take out crayons, colored pencils, pastels, or markers, a piece of white paper, and a pencil. Use the pictures on the site as a guide to help you create an aurora of your own on the top half of the paper. Then describe in your own words on the bottom half of the paper what you think it would be like to see an aurora happen right before your eyes. Use complete sentences!
