After Reading...
Activity #1
At the end of the novel, Julie has to decide whether she wants to devote herself to Eskimo culture and tradition, or move away from tradition as her father did. Click here to learn more about Eskimo culture. Then download this Microsoft Word document and print it out. You will need Microsoft Word (it comes standard with Microsoft Office) to do this. Go back through the novel and list all of the Eskimo traditions you can find in the column on the left. List any traditions not in the novel that you find out about after your visit to the website on the column on the right. Then answer the question about your opinion of the choice Julie made at the end of the novel between the Eskimo traditions and the modern lifestyle.
Activity #2
Click here to go to a great postcard website with two cards that relate to the theme of Julie of the Wolves: one depicts an Eskimo and a polar bear, and one depicts a seal. Choose any postcard. Pretend you are Julie. Write a penpal letter to Amy telling her all about your life with the wolves on the tundra. Be sure to use a correct letter format and be sure that you include events from the story in your letter as well as how those events made Julie feel. Once you are finished with the letter either e-mail it or print it out and give it to a friend whom you think would enjoy reading the book.
