The Balanced Man Project

Since the fall of 1992, Indiana Gamma has followed a strict non-hazing pledgeship.  To further the chapter's commitment to a positive membership development plan, the men of Indiana Gamma began discussion of the Balanced Man Project (BMP) during the 1993-94 school year.  The program was developed by the national headquarters as a method to improve the overall quality of its chapters by improving each individual member.  To implement the project, officers from the national fraternity briefed the chapter and 90% of a chapter vote had to be in favor of becoming a Balanced Man Project chapter.  The BMP has strict guidelines set up by the national fraternity; however, each chapter can adapt the project to meet the needs and the local traditions of the fraternity.  Realizing that once a chapter voted to implement the BMP it could not change back, the undergraduate members of Indiana Gamma voted to carry out the program in the spring of 1995.

This program removes the familiar pledge-active relationship, and it encourages men of the chapter to stay involved by creating four challenge stages that last the member's entire college career.  It is easy to see the benefits of this four-year development plan, yet understanding how the program works within the chapter is a difficult task.  The Balanced Man Project has four basic challenge stages: the Sigma Challenge, Phi Challenge, Epsilon Challenge, and Brother Mentor Challenge.

Each stage is set up to help the member to help the individual member through different periods of his college career. Each stage ends with a Rite of Passage Ceremony.  During each stage, the members choose a mentor, set three goals, and develop an action plan to achieve the goals.  The mentor can be any member in the next stage.  A mentor helps his mente set and achieve his goals. T his places the mente's membership standing in his own control. If he chooses not to fulfill his goals, he will be brought before the standards board and expelled from the fraternity.  However, if the mente makes great strides in his development, he may move on to the next stage.
