The African Studies Minor offers an interdisciplinary approach to the study of history, politics, anthropology, philosophy, music, economics, geography, women and many other cultural issues in Africa. "Africa"  is defined in its broadest geographical sense as including the entire continent. The African Studies Minor draws together a variety of departments from a number of colleges to offer students a broad view of the continents cultural richness and the history of this most ancient of continents as well as to understand, in-depth, the modern-day challenges Africa has endured and continues to face at the beginning of the twenty-first century.

The framework of the African Studies Minor is formulated so that students will emerge with enhanced knowledge and skills appropriate for entrance into masters and Ph.D. programs as well as careers in international law, business, education, government and any other profession that values in-depth knowledge of the African continent and its inhabitants.
