Why Technology Education?

In an interview with a secondary principal I would discuss and explain many reasons for having an effective Technology Education program implemented in his or her school. For instance, I would point out that students need to understand and know how to apply technology to survive in the modern world.  Students can benefit from the general everyday knowledge that is associated with Technology Education.  This knowledge, as well as hands-on experiences, can be used in future education, careers, hobbies, and daily life.  Technology Education can also help an individual learn problem solving and troubleshooting techniques that will not only be beneficail in class work but also during everyday situations.

Technology education can offer many contributions to the typical school curriculum.  By working closely with other school subjects, area businesses, and local industries, students can learn valuable social and professional skills.  Furthermore, it is a benefit to all when local education and the community supports one another.

Implementing a Technology Education program allows students to experience a wider variety of classes and experiences in a general education curriculum.  This could help some students determine what they want or could do with their lives (whether it is in a technology based career or not).  The modern Technology Education curriculum also supports other academic areas.  Many skills that students learn in math, science, and language arts will be used frequently and applied in the technology program.  This may help students struggling with a “traditional” class (math, science, English, etc.) because they can see how content and skills are being applied to real world issues.

When implemented properly, the impacts of a technology class become evident very quickly.  I personally feel that you will see a higher academic performance which will directly influence the way the school is perceived by the public.  You will also see students become excited to apply their knowledge and skills.  You might also see students start heading down different career paths at a younger age.  Students who have experience with technologies at the middle school, or even elementary level, can become more focused on their futures.  I personally feel that if people only live in the natural world, but the strive and succeed in the designed, engineered, world.
