Working in higher education as a math
or science educator isn't for everyone, but for a select few there
are outstanding opportunities in higher education for math and science
teachers who bring with them the richness of extensive classroom
experience. In fact, some higher educators talk about a crisis situation,
for some university math and science education positions go unfilled
because of a lack of candidates.
Some K-12 teachers have entered into
doctoral studies with the idea of a second career. That is, as they
head toward the end of their classroom careers, they complete a
doctorate in science or math education as part-time students. After
completing their degrees, they then teach part-time at the university
while remaining in their K-12 classrooms; or when they retire or
leave the classroom, they are ready to move into a university position.
Because of Ball State's emphasis on
college teaching, classroom teachers find the BSU doctoral programs
particularly attractive to their needs. E-mail
us to explore how the doctorate can be pursued by classroom
teachers.
