Do Your Doctorate Where Teaching and Research Make a Difference

Application Procedure

Students may be admitted to begin study in any semester -- fall, spring, or summer -- so applications may be submitted at any time.

However, most assistantships are awarded to begin in the fall semester, so for best consideration for assistantships, all application materials should be submitted by March 1 for the following academic year.

In all cases, all application materials, including completed application forms, official transcripts, recommendations, and test scores must be submitted at least four weeks prior to the end of the semester prior to the semester in which one desires to begin study. Click here for deadlines.

Note that all of the materials in both of these columns must be submitted. Some materials are submitted to the Graduate School and some are submitted to the Program Director.

  2. One official copy of transcripts from all previous college work. (Note that transcripts must be sent to both the Graduate School and to the doctoral program.)

  3. Three to five letters of recommendation that address your potential as a teacher and a scholar. Recommendations should be relevant to the degree program -- science or science education -- for which admission is sought.

At least two of the references should speak to your potential for academic success in a doctoral program.

At least two of the references should speak to your potential success as a science educator or post-secondary teacher of science.

(One person may write about one or both of these issues.)

International students have additional admission requirements. Contact the Center for International Programs for details. Because of the lengthy process required to process all materials, international students should submit all of their application materials at least one full semester prior to the start of the semester they plan to begin their Ball State studies.

In most cases an interview with the applicant may be requested by the Admission Committee.

Space is limited in the programs; not all applicants who meet minimum admission requirements may be accepted.
