Students can download a Mathematica student license free of charge at the download links below.

Windows:
http://download.wolfram.com/?key=59FEWH

Macintosh:
http://download.wolfram.com/?key=932S18

Students just need to grab an installer, install the license (license number L3268-8904), and follow the prompts to get a password through the Wolfram Research Website automatically -- the installer will prompt them to do this.

The student license allows you to run it 14 days without a password. At the end of 14 days (or sooner if you would like), click on the "enter password" button. It will ask you for name, organization, and license number; just use your name, Ball State University, and L3268-8904. The next screen will generate a MathID and direct you to a web site; you put that MathID in the web site and it returns a password and then you're all done.

Algebra-Trig Prep instructions

There are two way to satisfy the Algebra-Trig background requirements for calculus, using InQsit or using ALEKS, and each is explained below.  A passing mark indicates that your background is up to speed for calculus, and you will be given a perfect score for HW0.  This material is critical to being well prepared to succeed in calculus. The goal is to make sure everyone is up to speed with their background. If you do not get a passing mark by the deadline, you will get a zero for HW0, and will need to come see me to discuss whether staying enrolled in this class is a good option for you.

You must take the InQsit quiz (at least once) or the ALEKS assessment by Friday, August 28; however, you have until Sunday, September 6 to earn a passing mark.

Using InQsit:

InQsit Cost: Free

InQsit Passing mark: 85%

Take the algebra/trig quiz using the proctored inQsit program as directed below, multiple times if necessary, until you get a score of 85% or higher.  Since some questions are chosen at random, each time you take the exam it will be different and each student will be taking a slightly different exam.  If your score is not 85% or higher please carefully study the solutions that are provided at the end of the test.    If, after taking the exam and studying the solutions, you do not think you will score 85% or higher by the deadline you should come see me.  I will be happy to do what  I can to help get you caught up on this material.

To take the InQsit quiz:

1) Go to http://www.bsu.edu/inqsit/ and click on "Reservations" in the upper right corner.  From there you need to login with your BSU username and password to make a reservation for the "inQsit Testing Labs".  When you are logged into the reservation site, make a reservation to take a proctored quiz in either CN 313 or RB CBT.   Reserve 90 minutes in the lab so that you will have time to review solutions to the test, if necessary.

2) Take quiz with paper and pencil only.  Notes and calculators are not allowed.  You will be given 60 minutes to take it.

3) Remember that you will need to bring your student ID, your student login name and your student password when you go to take the test.  The quiz is under the name Stankewitz, and this quiz is called Math165-section003.

Practice this quiz at http://inqsit.bsu.edu/inqsit/signin.cgi/export/home/stankewitz?beta1-unix at any time from any computer.  Note, however, that your score will NOT count unless you take it in the proctored computer labs as directed above.

If you wish to prepare for the exam ahead of time to review some of these topics, you can find notes at any of the following (it will also give you an idea of what topics will be covered):

Using ALEKS:

ALEKS Cost: $30 (if purchased online at http://www.mhhe.com/aleks/)

ALEKS Passing mark: 172/215

ALEKS Course Code: GYYTG-UYRL9

ALEKS will provide an initial assessment (test) to determine which areas you are strong in and which need improvement.  After this assessment, you will choose from your areas for improvement and be led through a series of questions and tutorials until you have mastered that area.  Keep working through these until you have mastered all the material enough to achieve a passing mark.  Of course, you are encouraged to continue on until you perfect all areas.  The system will allow you 6 weeks to use ALEKS; however, you have only until the deadline to earn a passing mark.

To access ALEKS:  See ALEKSDEMO.ppt (powerpoint) which will lead you through the steps to follow at www.aleks.com.

Study guide for exams

When preparing for the exam::

  • READ THE BOOK. Read every chapter of the covered material. You'll be amazed at how much you now know and this really will (trust me) solidify what you need to know. These solidified ideas will make what seemed like 100 different problems look all the same and you will be able to do them all.
  • Re-do all the homework problems (don't just look over your old solutions). Re-do all the exam and quiz problems.
  • Learn all the necessary formulas, but be sure to be able to get by as well as you can without them.

When taking the exam

  • Show all your work
  • Don't erase work. If it is incorrect, leave it on the page and state that it is incorrect.
  • If you can't do a problem, just start doing whatever you can do.
  • If you can't do part of a problem, but you know what to do if you could do this one part, then tell me what you would do if you could.
  • If you can't do a problem, then tell me what you do know.
  • Check your work carefully. Sometimes you can do a problem two different ways and that way you can check your work.
  • Be prepared for problems that are not just like what you've seen before.
