Assignment:

Professionalism Pamphlet

See Course Calendar. http://www.bsu.edu/web/rlshackelfor/ITEDU691/CourseCalendar.htm

This assignment is worth 60 points.

Purpose:

The purpose of this assignment is to help you develop an in-depth position and understanding of what it means to be a professional in your field.

Calhoun (1987) describes a professional as "a technical expert who applies a body of theoretical knowledge according to a code of conduct to perform certain functions valued by society in general".  Professionalism also has deep foundational roots associated with acceptable or expected behaviors, knowledge, and/or ethics.  Included in these roots are basic normative and technical issues.  Terms commonly associated with professionalism include:
  (1) Duties / Responsibilities / Professional Ethics and Actions
  (2) Professional and/or Teaching Characteristics
  (3) Fundamentals of Behavior and/or Knowledge
  (4)  Definitions
  (5) Technical and Normative Issues

 Objectives:

Given the information in the Professionalism Pamphlet Assignment and Professionalism Pamphlet Assessment Form you will:
  (1) Research the topic of professionalism and "what does it mean to be a professional in your field".
  (2) Develop an original, one page, front and back, color pamphlet capable of communicating to others what it means to be a professional in your field.
  (3) Use current APA format for all citations and bibliography listings.
  (4) Actively exchange ideas and information with other students in-class.

Your
Task(s):

You are to use the results of your investigation into professionalism (e.g., articles, books, professional organizations [NCATE, NEA, or AFT], etc.) to develop an original (8 X 11) pamphlet capable of communicating to others what it means to be a professional in your field.   The tasks to be completed during this activity include:
  (1)  Researching the topic/concept of professionalism and how it relates to your field.

See Course Resources for information on the characteristics of good teachers and professionalism.  Naturally, your examination of and research into this topic should go beyond the sources listed in the "Course Resource" document.

Library professionals will give you one-on-one assistance with your research needs including finding online databases and journals, Internet resources, and library materials. There is no software to download, and the service is free!   (2) Locating and selecting resources to be used.
  (3) Developing an original, one page, front and back, color pamphlet that describes what it means to be a professional in your field (be sure to identify your field in the pamphlet.

For a sample of a professionalism pamphlet see the following two pdf / pdf files. Remember, do not attach any degree of quality to the sample pamphlets.
  (4) Using current APA format to provide appropriate citations and references.  Your pamphlet should include a reference section on the back side.

Note: Be ever mindful of the appropriate and correct use of information from others (plagiarism).  This pamphlet is to be a summary of your thoughts based upon your research -- not a series of long quotes.
  (5) Because you are the author of this pamphlet, be sure your name, address and other appropriate contact information appears on the document in an appropriate location.
  (6) Submit a copy of your pamphlet via email and a hard copy through the mail.
