Strategies and Materials for Teaching |
Assignment: |
Using
Instructional Strategies and Media to Enhance Learning See Course Calendar http://www.bsu.edu/web/rlshackelfor/ITEDU691/CourseCalendar.htm This assignment is worth 200 points. (This assignment has several objectives/tasks. Be sure to start on it early and examine it carefully before proceeding.) |
Purpose: |
The effective use of
instructional strategies and media is a key element in good teaching.
During the teaching / learning process the instructor must select the most
effective strategy and media for reaching identified goals or objectives.
Not only must the strategy and media be matched to the objective and content,
but even more importantly it must be appropriate for the identified
learner(s). The purpose of this lesson is to enhance your knowledge of and ability to use several different teaching/learning strategies and forms of instructional media. |
Objectives: |
Given the information in the Instructional Strategies and Media Assignment and Instructional Strategies Assessment Form you will:
(1) | Research and examine three different instructional strategies.
| (2) | Prepare a lesson (approximately 40 - 50 minutes in length) using one of the instructional strategies you investigated. | |||
| (3) | Develop a one page (each) paper, content outline, and bibliography to communicate how the lesson will be used and the research related to its preparation. | |||
| (4) | Develop a Strategy Information Sheet for each of the three instructional strategies investigated. | |||
| (5) | Research, select, produce, and effectively use instructional media to support learning.. | |||
| (6) | Develop a Media Mini-Tip paper that effectively communicates how to effectively use the selected media to support identified learnings. | |||
| (7) | Use current APA format for all citations and bibliography listings. | |||
| (8) | Actively exchange ideas and information with other students in-class. | |||
Your |
You are to use the
results of your investigation into instructional strategies and media (e.g.,
articles, books, WWW, etc.) to develop a lesson -- using one of the
strategies/media you choose to investigate -- to reach lesson objectives.
During this activity you are to: |
(1) | Research and examine
"three different instructional strategies" that you believe
are capable of supporting the learnings associated with potential lesson objectives. Naturally, your examination of and research into this topic should go beyond the sources listed in the "Course Resource" document. See course resources for information on a variety of different instructional strategies. http://www.bsu.edu/web/rlshackelfor/itedu/Resources.htm Potential instructional strategies include but are not limited to: |
(a) | Case Studies | ||
(b) | Contracting | ||
(c) | Discovery | ||
(d) | Demonstration | ||
(e) | Inquiry | ||
(f) | Interview | ||
(g) | Lecture | ||
(h) | Problem-Solving | ||
(i) | Individualized Learning
(j) | Questioning | ||
(k) | Role-Playing | ||
(l) | Jigsaw | ||
(m) | Simulation | ||
(n) | Cooperative Learning
(o) | Collaboration | ||
(p) | Etc. (You can select
instructional strategies that are not included in the above list.
The only purpose of this list is to give you an idea of how broad this
topic is and the vast number of strategies you have to select
from. To enhance your professional development I encourage you to
select strategies you are unfamiliar with.) |
Another excellent resource is "The Handbook of Effective Teaching and Assessment Strategies" by Anthony S. Dallmann-Jones and the Black River Group published by Twin Lights Publishers, Inc. This may be out of print so check your local libraries or online sources for old books.

| (2) | Select a topic that is related to an identified technological concept or principle. | |||
| (3) | Develop a one page paper to include: | |||
| (a) | The lesson's title or topic. The lesson title or topic should be related to an identified technological concept or principle. | |||
| (b) | A statement of the lesson's purpose. | |||
| 1. | Remember, the lesson should be approximately 40 - 50 minutes in length and effectively use one of the instructional strategies you have investigated. | |||
| (c) | A description of the audience (e.g., age, grade level, course enrolled in, gender makeup, etc.) you will be presenting the lesson to. | |||
| (d) | Develop appropriate behavioral objective(s) for the lesson to be taught (e.g., cognitive, psychomotor, affective, and/or social). | |||
| 1. | See
Course Resources for information on developing goals and objectives. http://www.bsu.edu/web/rlshackelfor/itedu/Resources.htm |
(4) | Develop a Strategy Information Sheet for each of the three instructional strategies investigated. This one to two page paper should include:
(a) | A description of the strategy and when it should be used.
(b) | Suggested procedures or recommendations for implementing or using the strategy.
(c) | A list of the strategy's advantages.
(d) | A list of the strategy's disadvantages.
(e) | A bibliography of resources used to investigate the strategy (e.g., articles, books, WWW, etc.).
(f) | For the strategy that you select to use please add one additional section. In this additional section you are to describe how effective the strategy was in supporting the identified lesson objectives.
(g) | To enhance the understanding and use the strategies you have investigated. I may ask that all strategy information sheets be shared with the other students in this class. Thus, you should be sure to put your name and appropriate contact information on each of your Strategy Information Sheets.
| (h) | See the following PDF or PDF files for a sample Instructional Strategy Sheets.. | |||
Caution: A careful review the Instructional Strategies Assessment Form shows that this portion of the assignment is worth 65 points. In the past, students have lost a significant number of points because they failed to communicate that they had adequately research these potential strategies and "truly" developed an in-depth understanding of them. You should consider these as three two page research papers.
(5) | Develop a content outline for the lesson. (maximum length one page).
(6) | Research and examine
"several different forms of instructional media" that you believe
are capable of supporting the learnings associated with the lesson objectives. There are many forms of media. These materials/objects only become instructional media when they are used to support learning. Instructional media can include but is not limited to models, chalk/white boards, transparencies, handouts, drawing/pictures, charts, videos, slides, audio tapes, kits, projected media, simulations, computers, television, chroma-key walls, hypermedia, CD-ROM, Virtual Reality, games, etc. With effective media, a teacher can enhance instruction by stimulating several parts of the brain and extending human capacities. Because of this flexibility, many forms of instructional media are extremely helpful when presenting content, demonstrating a process or system, or supporting cognitive, affective, or psychomotor development. (NOTE: For this part of the assignment you are to use a form of instructional media other than any form of PowerPoint.) During the research, selection, and use of media take the following tasks into consideration: |
(a) | Analyze your selected lesson objectives, audience, and instructional strategy.
(b) | Research several forms of instructional media that may be appropriate for the intended lesson.
| (c) | Select a media form that matched your instructional objectives. | |||
| (d) | Develop and effectively use the media to support learning. | |||
(e) | Prepare a one page Media Mini-Tip Paper that:
| (1) | Identifies the form of instructional media used. | |||
| (2) | Summarizes potential instructional problems that can be solved through the proper use of the selected media. | |||
| (3) | Makes recommendations for properly and effectively using the selected form of instructional media. | |||
| (4) | If space permits consider providing a list of advantages and disadvantages associated with the media's use. | |||
| (5) | Lists the resources used to develop this one page mini-tip. | |||
| (6) | See the following PDF or PDF files for a sample Media Mini-Tip Paper. | |||
Caution: A careful review the Instructional Strategies Assessment Form shows that this portion of the assignment is worth 30 points. In the past, students have lost a significant number of points because they failed to communicate that they had adequately research the identified form of media and "truly" developed an in-depth understanding of it. You should consider this as a one page research paper.
(7) | Develop
a lesson plan using any format you deem appropriate. However, this lesson plan should follow what many consider the "Golden Rule of Lesson Planning" that says: "Tell them what you are going to tell them, Tell it to them, and then Tell them what you told them." The translation: Start with an introduction; including an "agenda" or set of goals for the presentation, provide the content; information and then summarize the presentation." (Tips. (n.d.). Retrieved June 1, 2002 from http://www.envision.co.nz/tips.html) See Course Resources for information on lesson design and other related topics. http://www.bsu.edu/web/rlshackelfor/itedu/Resources.htm |
| (8) | The lesson plan
developed in Task #7 must also include some form of assessment to
demonstrate the lesson's effectiveness. This can be any form of
assessment (e.g., as demonstrated by lesson closure, summary, quiz,
homework, etc.) that can be used to show that learning took place during
the lesson. See Strategies Assessment Form Sections 4.c.5. and 5.c. http://www.bsu.edu/web/rlshackelfor/ITEDU691/instructionalstrategies assessmentform.htm |
(9) | Develop a one page reference sheet or bibliography of the resources used to develop your lesson and its content outline.
(a) | Use current APA format for the bibliography and all citations.
(10) | Present your lesson to the identified audience and assess learning.
(11) | Have the lesson videotaped on VHS tape.
(12) | Submit all materials for assessment.
(13) | If, after reading the assignment and reviewing the assessment form, you have any questions about the assignment or where you can obtain additional sources of information on different instructional strategies, I encourage you discuss these needs with others in the class.
| Submit: | Submit the following materials for assessment and feedback. Be sure to put your name on each paper to be submitted. I recommend that this be placed in the document's header or footer. | |||
| (1) | A one page paper that includes: (a) the lesson topic or title, (b) a purpose statement [what you planned to accomplish during the lesson], (c) a description of the audience you are to present the lesson to, and (d) behavioral objectives for the identified lesson. | |||
| (2) | A copy of the content outline for the lesson. (a one page limit) | |||
| (3) | A one page reference sheet or bibliography of the sources used in the development of the lesson and its content outline. (Remember to use current APA Format.) | |||
| (4) | Copies of your three Strategy Information Sheets. | |||
| (5) | A copy of any handouts, visuals, etc. used during the lesson. | |||
| (6) | A copy of the lesson plan. | |||
| (7) | A copy of the Media Mini-Tip. | |||
| (7) | Email a copy of your one page paper, content outline, strategy information sheets, bibliography, media mini-tip, and lesson plan to the instructor. (Include each item as attachments to the email.) | |||
| (8) | Mail
(a) a copy of your VHS videotaped presentation, (b) a copy of your
one page paper, (c) a copy of your lesson plan, (d) a copy of your one page content
outline, (f) a copy of your bibliography, (g) copies of your strategy
information sheets, (h) media mini-tip and (i) copies of any handouts, visuals, etc. used during the
lesson to the instructor. All materials will be returned to you by mail. Mailed materials should include a cover page that includes: (a) your name, (b) the department and university name, (c) the course name and number, (d) date, (e) your mailing and email address, and (f) a contact phone number. |
