Assignment:   Presenting Content Using PowerPoint and Data Projection Systems

See Course Calendar http://www.bsu.edu/web/rlshackelfor/ITEDU691/CourseCalendar.htm

Please read the assignment and corresponding Assessment Form thoroughly, and clarify any questions before beginning this assignment.

This assignment is worth
150 points.

Purpose:   Until recently, computer projection systems were not able to project good, high quality images.  However, with effective projection systems and quality presentation software, a teacher can now plan and use projected media to enhance instruction by controlled viewing of computer generated information.  Because of their portability and improved quality, it is now also convenient and effective to use data projection systems for presenting information in almost any setting.  Because of this flexibility, many presenters find data projection systems extremely helpful when presenting content; and/or demonstrating or discussing graphic, spreadsheet, simulation, or desktop publishing programs.

The purpose of this Assignment is to give you the opportunity to develop and/or enhance your ability to support learning using data projection and PowerPoint presentation software.

Objectives: Given the information in the Using PowerPoint and Data Projection Systems Assignment and Data Projection Assessment Form you will:
  (1) You will develop a fifteen (15) to fifty (50) minute lesson designed to enhance student understanding of a technological concept/principle.  The delivery of this lesson will be supported by electronic PowerPoint media and an appropriate data projection system.

NOTE: For purposes of this assignment, the data projection system may include any form of projection system (e.g., LCD projector, large screen TV, etc.) that projects an appropriate image in your teaching environment.
  (2)

Enhance the effectiveness of your PowerPoint materials and lesson by using the resources found in the Projected Media Recommendations and Course Resources.

  (3)

Develop a one page (each) paper, content outline, and bibliography to communicate how the Assignment's materials will be used and the research related to their preparation.

  (4)

Use current APA format for all citations and bibliography listings.

  (5)

Develop a lesson plan using the Madeline Hunter format.

  (6)

Present an effective lesson.

  (7)

Have your lesson videoed.

  (8)

Actively exchange ideas and information with other students in-class.

All students should gain access to their free elementk account through Ball State University's Technology Training Support center located in the Library.  elementk gives you access to free tutorials on over 20 computer programs, including PowerPoint.  If you did not use the elementk PowerPoint tutorials in Module #2, I highly encourage you to examine and complete the appropriate (e.g., appropriate to your skill level) elementk PowerPoint training unit(s).   From the PowerPoint 2003 section consider the following:
1.  "Creating a Basic Presentation"
2.  "Delivering Presentations"
3.  "Modifying Presentations"
4.  "Working with Tables, Charts, and Diagrams"

Upon successful completion of each PowerPoint or other elementk Tutorial there is an assessment instrument.  Upon successful completion of this assessment a certificate is available.  Individuals often include these certificates in their portfolios or as evidence of advanced training.

To gain access to elementk simply perform the following:

      1. Go to elementk.com online and click on Student Enrollment.
http://www.elementk.com/
      2. Enter access key 7636-etrain-1123.
      3. Fill out the enrollment form.
      4. Use your BSU User ID_bsu.  "Example asimth_bsu"
      5. You should now have access to your personal 24/7 e-leanring community.
      6. If you need assistance call the BSU Helpdesk at 765-285-5653.

If you need assistance in performing this task, the following ideas or sources of information will help.

      1. In PowerPoint use the "Help" icon to give you access to Microsoft PowerPoint Help.  Then use the "Contents", " Answer Wizard", or " Index" to find information on topics such as "ungroup and modify clipart".

Note:   "You can also convert a Microsoft Windows Metafile into Microsoft PowerPoint drawing objects. After the image has been converted into drawing objects, you can add and delete objects and make other changes by using the tools on the Drawing toolbar."  This option can be found by progressing through the links, in Help, associated with the "ungroup and modify clipart" information.

      2. Also see Course Resources for additional PowerPoint information and tutorials.
http://www.bsu.edu/web/rlshackelfor/itedu/Resources.htm
      3. Or use the following Acadiau PowerPoint Tutorial to show you how to modify your PowerPoint Clip Art.  The  purpose of the tutorial is to create an image as part of a master slide.  However, the same ungrouping and grouping techniques will not only let you delete portions of the clip art but will also let you change fill and line colors.
