1. Phi Mu was the first sorority to produce a color-sound movie about sorority life, “Carnation Ball.” It has been used widely in our chapters and by Panhellenic groups.
2. Phi Mu, founded in 1852, is the second oldest college organization for women in the world. Our founding day is celebrated every year on March 4.
3. Our chapter development concept of one business meeting and three programs monthly in collegiate chapters makes Phi Mu membership much more relevant and better meets students’ needs. Phi Mu was the first with this idea.
4. We insist on no hazing of our provisional members. Their pledgeship is a getting-acquainted period, and is approached on a mature basis. Provisional members are included in chapter development programs so they become a part of sisterhood more quickly. As a step in erasing the old connotations of ‘pledgeship,’ the 1970 convention directed that henceforth pledges will be called provisional members. Many chapters refer to them as Phis.
5. We have a rapidly growing and flourishing foundation, the educational and philanthropic arm of Phi Mu Fraternity. Through it, Project Hope is supported by collegiate and alumnae chapters. Almost $676,000 has been given since the project was adopted in 1963. Many scholarships are given through the foundation - $64,000 or more annually. Ours was one of the first sorority foundations, having been founded in 1958.
6. Phi Mu adopted a second national philanthropy, one with local appeal, at the 1986 Convention. Children’s Miracle Network is the second philanthropy to benefit from Phi Mu Chapters. Phi Mu is the only sorority that supports CMN.
7. Phi Mu’s badge is known for its unique beauty; it once won an award as the most beautifully designed of all Greek pins.
8. We are experiencing the greatest growth in membership and in numbers of chapters in our history. Expansion has been North, South, East, and West across the country. There are over 131 Phi Mu Chapters and two colonies. There are also over 200 alumnae chapters to keep Phi Mu’s involved for life.
