Juanita Hults Environmental Learning Center

The Juanita Hults Environmental Learning Center (HELC) is one of five properties managed by the Field Station and Environmental Eduction Center. The purpose of the HELC is to provide quality environmental education for school groups in Northeast Indiana. HELC is a 100-acre farm that was willed to the department in 1987 by Juanita Hults Maley. She envisioned the property should be used to reach students and enhance their awareness of the natural environment around them. On the property are five ecosystems: a wetland, a tallgrass prairie, a hardwood forest, fields undergoing natural succession, and agricultural areas.

Local school groups, ranging from kindergarten to high school, schedule visits with the Ball State University graduate assistant that is working at HELC. The graduate assistant will then meet with the school group and lead them through a variety of activities on the property. Some of the activities include tree and wildflower identification, aquatic insect identification, soil and water quality testing, and other basic ecological concepts. Most of the students take away from HELC a greater understanding of their environment and a wonderful outdoor experience that they will remember for years to come.
