Multimedia.....the facet of today's society
that is changing ever-so rapidly. It is revolutionizing communication and
entertainment as we know it. But what exactly
do we mean by using the term "Multimedia"?
Above is a generic definition provided
by Ball State's TCOM 101 website. For a more specific definition, I turned
to TechWeb.com and accessed its TechEncylopedia.
- "Information in more than one form. It
includes the use of text, audio, graphics, animated graphics and full-motion
video. Multimedia programs are typically games, encyclopedias and training
courses on CD-ROM or DVD. However, any application with sound and/or video
can be called a multimedia program. See hot
topics and trends." - TechWeb: The
Business Technology Network
The following two definitions
pertain to multimedia in terms of computer use. While
the definition is not stated in the same context as above, the term multimedia
posesses the same basic meaning.
- "The use of computers
to present text, graphics, video, animation, and sound in an integrated way.
Long touted as the future revolution in computing, multimedia applications
were, until the mid-90s, uncommon due to the expensive hardware required.
With increases in performance and decreases in price, however, multimedia
is now commonplace. Nearly all PCs are capable of displaying video, though
the resolution available depends on the power of the computer's video adapter
and CPU." - Webopedia
