Biography
Michael Pounds
was born in Cleveland, Ohio in
1964. After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree and working for a
few years as a mechanical engineer at the NASA Lewis Research Center in
Cleveland, he decided to give up a life of comfort and stability for a
career in music. He studied composition at Bowling Green State
University (Bowling Green, Ohio), and received a Master of Music degree
at Ball State University (Muncie, Indiana), where he was the graduate
assistant at the Music Engineering Technology Studios. He also received
a Master of Music degree from the University of Birmingham in England,
where he studied composition with Jonty Harrison. He completed
his education with a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of
Illinois, where he served as the Operations Assistant for the Experimental Music Studios. At
the University of Illinois he studied composition with Erik Lund and
Guy Garnett, and electro-acoustic music composition with Scott Wyatt.
His awards
include the 1998 ASCAP/SEAMUS Student
Commission Award, a Residence Award at the 25th International
Electroacoustic Music Competition in Bourges, France, and a Rotary
Ambassadorial Scholarship to study electro-acoustic music composition
in England. His music has been released on the Music from SEAMUS
(Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the U.S.) CD series, and on the
CD entitled Passages, produced at the University of Illinois.
His music has been performed throughout the United States and in
Canada, Mexico, England, France, Spain, Austria, Korea, Australia and
New Zealand. He was a co-host of the 2005 national conference of the
Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the U.S.
Michael is
currently an
assistant professor at Ball State University where he serves as the Coordinator of the Music Technology program.
