In 1987, Redstone's National Amusements theatre group bought 83% of Viacom. While he has been Chairman of the board for National Amusements Inc. since 1986, and Chief Executiv Officer of the company since July 1967 he took on additional responsibilities as CEO of Viacom Inc. in 1996.  Redstone was also President of National Amusements from July 1967 until December 1999. He has also served as Chairman of the Board of the National Association of Theatre Owners, and is currently a member of the Executive Committee of that organization. In addition he is also a member of the Advisory Council for the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Foundation and serves on the Board of Trustees for The Museum of Television and Radio. He is also a visiting professor at Harvard Law School and Brandeis University.  In 1992, while a part of the faculty of the Boston University School of Law, he started one of the nation's first courses in entertainment law.
