Exam 1 will be on Wednesday, 9/30/09.  It will cover all material up to and including Lecture 7 and Lab 5 questions 1 - 3 (not the material from Lecture 8 on the Excel Solver).  For this exam you will be allowed one side of a 5” by 8” index card of personal notes.  These cards will be turned in at the end of the exam.  You will also be allowed to use the help files within Excel, but you will not be allowed to access other materials such as old homework or labs, class lectures, or class notes.

Topics in Mathematica

• Ball State students can download a Mathematica student license free of charge at the following links:  (Windows Version)  (Macintosh Version)

• Click on the appropriate link to grab an installer, install the license (license number L3268-8904), and follow the prompts to get a password through the Wolfram Research Website automatically -- the installer will prompt you to do this.
• The student license allows you to run Mathematica for 14 days without a password.
• At the end of 14 days (or sooner if you would like), click on the "enter password" button.  It will ask you for name, organization, and license number; just use your name, Ball State University, and L3268-8904. The next screen will generate a MathID and direct you to a web site; you put that MathID in the web site and it returns a password and then you're all done.

• Anyone can download a free copy of Octave.  Octave is an open-source software package that will run most MATLAB commands.  For convenience Octave-Forge supplies pre-built installers for Octave:  (Windows Version)  (Macintosh Version for OS X)
