The Muncie Center for Medical Education is located in east-central Indiana about fifty miles northeast of Indianapolis. Once the home of the Munsee or Wolf Clan of the Delaware Indians, the city of Muncie was incorporated in 1865. The discovery of natural gas in 1886 led to Muncie becoming a national center for glass and steel manufacturing. Although the natural gas boom quickly passed, Muncie (population 90,000) remains a thriving community with roots in manufacturing and agriculture.
Situated on the campus of Ball State University, Emens Auditorium features world class theatre, opera and dance. Muncie also support its own Symphony orchestra showcasing local talent along with guest artists from the worlds of jazz, popular and classical music.
Muncie is also home to the Academy of Model Aeronautics and the National Model Aviation Museum. For those that prefer land based activities, Minnetrista Cultural Center and Oakhurst Gardens allow you to experience the culture of East Central Indiana first hand.
Sports enthusiasts will find many opportunities to cheer on their favorite athletic teams. Ball State University competes at the NCAA's highest level in 22 intercollegiate athletic sports, including basketball, football, cross country, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, swimming/diving, tennis, track and field, volleyball and soccer. East Central Indiana is very well known as a hotbed for high school and middle school girl's volleyball and boy's basketball.
For those that prefer to participate in a sport, the community offers playgrounds, picnic areas, ball diamonds, basketball and tennis courts, and swimming pools. There are numerous hiking, biking and nature trails. For water enthusiasts, the local reservoir supports boating and fishing. For those that prefer "18 holes", there are number of public and private golf courses in the local area.
Once the subject of several sociological studies on the industrial era's effect on values, morals and family, Muncie continues to be a good place to live and raise a family. Housing costs continue to remain low with the quality of life high.
