Maths 390: Honors Colloquium in Mathematics (1-6)

Syllabus

A total of 6 hours of credit may be earned.  

1. Course Description:  Selected topics in mathematics with emphasis on individualized study.  

2. Course Objective: Through study of a particular mathematical theme, concept, or topic, the student will receive a deeper appreciation for mathematics.

3. Course Rationale:  The course is intended to serve the Honors Program and, as such, introduces the Honors Student to mathematics as humanistic endeavor.  

4. Course Content:  A mathematical theme, concept, or topic is developed in a manner not available in any other mathematics course, and generally emphasizes the created, evolutionary, interdisciplinary, or artistic side of mathematics.  Specific content varies by term.  

5. Course Format: two seminar-type meetings each week.

6. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance:  examples include projects, essays, participation  in discussions, and testing, at the discretion of the instructor. 

7. Evaluation of the Course:  Honors courses are routinely evaluated by the Honors College. The course is also reviewed and revised periodically by the Departmental Undergraduate Programs Committee, and the instruction of the course is evaluated by Departmental student evaluations and peer evaluation.
