Odysseus Book I Review Lesson Plan

Lesson: Review of part one books in the Odyssey
Goal: To review the characters and content in Part One of the
Odyssey
Objectives
1. Students will answer questions that deal specifically with
content and ideas in the Odyssey.
2. Students will describe the main characters within their book.
3. Students will present information in front of the class for
a final review period.
4. Students will take gather information on main characters for
a quiz
Materials
- Cube with questions
- Pens/pencils
- Paper
 
Procedures
Students were placed in groups by interest. They chose from the
following books: Cyclops, Land of the Dead, Lotus Eaters, Sirens,
Scylla and Charybdis and the Cattle of the Sun God. Each student
choose the book they understood and felt the most comfortable
answering questions and giving a response to, there are 5-6 people
in each group. Every person in the book will be responsible for
knowing the questions listed on their cubes. I can call on any
group member at any time to describe their answers. This group
work will be the first 20 minutes of class.
Cyclops answer the following questions on your own sheet
of paper
- Draw a picture of Polyphemus
- What did Odyssey do to blind Polyphemus and escape from him?
- What happened when Odysseus broke into the Cyclops cave?
Land of the Dead- answer the following questions on your own
sheet of paper
- Circe tells Odysseus before leaving he must go where and why?
- Why is Tiresias significant to Odysseus?
- What does Odysseus promise to for his crew men and why?
Lotus Eaters- answer the following questions on your own sheet
of paper
- Have you ever been diverted from achieving an important goal
by something more attractive, describe what happened in you situation.
- What happens to the crew members who eat the Lotus?
- What keeps Odysseus from reaching home?
Sirens- answer the following questions on your own sheet of paper
- What are the sirens?
- How do Odysseus men avoid hearing the sirens song?
- What happens to sailors who hear the sirens song?.
Cattle of the Sun God- answer the following questions on your
own sheet of paper
- Who encourages Odysseus men to eat Helios cattle?
- How do Odysseus men die?
- How does Odysseus manage to escape death?
Scylla and Charybdis -answer the following questions on your
own sheet of paper
- What is Scylla & Charybis?
- Which of theses two does Odysseus chose to sail towards and
why?
- Describe how Scylla kills six of the men?
Students will find the answers to the questions on their cube
and they will give a brief presentation to the class on the findings.
This will be approximately 25 minutes. Every student will be responsible
for listening and taking their own form of notes. This presentation
/ review will prepare them for the quiz.
Lastly the class will review the lesson on characters and other
specifics in the Odyssey and they will proceed in taking the Book
I quiz.
Assessment
- Students will be evaluated on their group work through the presentation
that each member of the group will be responsible for participating
in.
- They must speak using their communication voices and must explain
in detail their findings for their particular book.
- Students will be evaluated on their responses during the whole
class review lesson in preparation for the quiz.
- Students will be evaluated through their actually quiz scores.
