The Smurfs

At last count, there were 101 Smurfs, 99 of which are male. The two females are Sassette, who is one of the three Smurf children added to the series halfway through its run; and, of course, Smurfette, who is the only adult female smurf.

Her unique position leads us to believe either a) she is being subjected to some kind of mass-procreative effort which keeps her pregnant every day of her life, or b) Smurfs asexually reproduce. Since we never see Smurfette as visibly pregnant and Smurfs do not appear to be either marsupials or reptiles, I like to think that perhaps they spring out of holes in the ground or grow themselves in test tubes. The idea of 98 Smurfs having their way with Smurfette is icky.

It is also important to note that Smurfette is not only the lone female, but she is also a stereotypical female. She is superficial and dainty, employing her feminine wiles to manipulate the scores of male Smurfs around her. She has long, blonde hair (the male Smurfs are hairless), and wears a lacy, white dress. Her appearance and manner imply that she is a virgin/Madonna character, but as I discussed before, the science of reproduction makes that highly unlikely.

There are waaaaaaaaaaay too many Smurfs for me to take you through a character list, but if you'd like to know more about some of them, check out this page.
