INTASC Standard #7

Instructional Planning Skills

The teacher plans instruction based on knowledge of subject matter, students, the community, and curriculum goals.

At Ball State University they teach the importance of National Standards for Music Education from the very beginning. I always thought that it was crazy for our professors to make us memorize the national standards. Now I am so glad that I did because I can quickly assess my lesson plans for the week to see which standards I am covering and which ones I need to cover in the future. At the bottom of ever lesson plan made this semester I wrote which national standards were covered during that particular lesson. Click on the standard to view a lesson that focuses on that particular standard.

1. Singing, alone and with other a varied repertoire of music
2. Performing on instruments, alone and with others
3. Improvising melodies, variations, and accompaniments
4. Composing and arranging music within specified guidelines
5. Reading and notating music
6. Listening to, analyzing, and describing music
7. Evaluating music and music performances
8. Understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts
9. Understanding music in relation to history culture

During student teaching, I also learned the importance of introducing a concept in one piece and reinforcing the same concept in the next lesson in another piece and through different musical experiences. The next two artifacts show the idea of taking a musical concept such as syncopation teaching it in the first lesson and reviewing and identifying it in the second lesson for the week with a different piece of music. This type of planning helps students identify a musical concept in more than one way.

Lesson Plans from Field Experience at Southside High School, MUSED 356 - These are the lesson plans from my Field Teaching experience at Southside High School.  Each lesson plan has behavioral objectives and a sequence for meeting those behavioral objectives.
- I have learned the importance writing logical, sequential lesson plans.  I have also learned the importance of memorizing lesson plans and it is much easier to memorize if they are logical.
- These lesson plans show that I am able to write lesson plans that are organized and appropriate for high school students.
