Music is not a passive subject. When I am
teaching students are actively involved in singing, playing
instruments, moving, creating, listening, listening, and
reading and writing. These activities are called the
experiences of music. I write the experiences of music at the
end of each lesson plan.
I was fortune to student teach in a school
that values the arts. Every other year the entire school makes
a CD. The Studio D recording studio sets up in the library.
Each grade has a scheduled time to record. Students learn
about the recording process and can purchase a CD that is like
a musical scrapbook. There is much planning, preparation, and
rehearsal that must go into this CD making process, but I
think that all the work is worthwhile because of the music
experience that it provides the students.

I
used the song Howdi Do with my first and second grade classes.
Howdi Do is a funny song that was written by Woody Guthrie.
Howdi Do is a wonderful childrenís book that and comes with a
CD. We learned the song by listening to the CD and looking at
the pictures in the book. By coming up with a pair of rhyming
words it is easy to create more verses to the song. Students
were able to come up with many different verses. Student came
to class the second time that week with even more verses. It
is always a trill to have kids singing a song as they walk
down the hall. It is wonderful to see kids take pride in their
own creativity.

I was able to use a
variety of resources during my student teaching. I loved
having two textbooks at my finger tips. I will never be the
type of teacher follows the exact lesson in the book, or even
goes through the book in order. I like that the textbooks help
organize musical concepts, but I think that only using the
book would short change students because of all the
experiences that can be given through other resources. Here is
a list of resources used during student teaching.
