During student teaching, it was wonderful to work with
the Royerton staff. All of the teachers were very
supportive of the music program. Royerton is also lucky
to have a principal that values providing students with a
quality music education. In music education there are
always rehearsals and events that happen outside of the school
day. It was great to work with a music educator and
school that recognizes the benefit of providing students with
performing experiences. The parents of the Ringers (4th
and 5th grade choir chime group), Singers (4th and 5th grade
choir), and Jazz Kids are extremely supportive of their
children.
On
February 12th students from Royerton Redbird Singers sang at
Circle the State with Song. Circle the State with Song
provides talented students with and opportunity to perform
quality music literature with other students from the
area. I directed some of the CSWS rehearsals and played
piano for other rehearsals. It was a thrill to work with
this group of committed singers. Students spent the this
particular Saturday morning working with a clinician and then
performed for parents in the afternoon. For the
performance, I played recorder for the piece Dowiedzena.
I was thrilled to be on stage with hundreds of upper
elementary students. This day was an excellent
opportunity to meet other music teachers.

The Jazz
Kids are the 4th graders that traveled to the Indiana Music
Educators Association convention in Indianapolis in
January. This group loved singing and performing
together. The Oscar Mayer food company sponsers a
contest for school music programs to earn prizes. The
group entering the contest must make a video of student
singing the Oscar Mayer theme song. Click

The Jazz
Kids recorded a video for the contest. I assisted with
rehearsals and collaborated with my cooperating teacher on how
the students should perform this jingle. I came up with
the idea for our video and had a friend of mine, that is a
telecommunications major, recorded the video. I also
learned about auditioning students for solos and the
importance of giving everone the opportunity to
audition. I learned that it takes much work to make a
video with 4th grade students. My students were very
patient, but the filming process is quite lengthy for a 2
minute video. I was extremely pleased with the final
product and the Jazz Kids were proud of the work that they
commercial they created.

On April
21st, Royerton Ringers and Singers participated in the FAME
festival. FAME stands for Foundation of Art and Music in
Elementary Education. Students had artwork on displayed
at the festival. Ringers and Singers performed several
pieces individually and together. I conducted for some
of the pieces and accompanied on piano for other pieces.
I also conducted the audience in God Bless America. This
was an excellent opportunity for students to perform for
parents and people in the community. It is clear that my
cooperating teacher and school agree that providing students
with performance opportunites is essential. Hours of
preparation are needed for any performance. Giving students
performance opportunites gives them a chance to be successful
music makers.
