INTASC Principle 9
The teacher is a reflective
practitioner who continually evaluates the effects of his/her
choices and actions on others (students, parents, and other professionals
in the learning community) and who actively seeks out
opportunities to grow professionally.
Being a reflective practitioner is
a part of life but it is especially important for teachers who are always
trying new methods of presenting material. After a lesson or activity
it is important that teachers take the time to evaluate how well that activity
went and what they could change or add to make it more productive. Teachers
who put forth the extra effort to reflect on lessons are going to be even
more effective and professional in their classrooms because they are going
to be striving to always give the students the best they can possibly give.
Some ways that I can see reflecting are to look at the
assessment and see how clearly the students understood what was being presented.
Also use student evaluations and have a list of questions for yourself to
answer.
One of my teachers in high school was always revising
her plans for the week in order to be sure that all of the information was
clearly understood. If there was any misunderstandings she would find
a new way to present the material. On of her students went so far as
to say that this teacher takes you by the hand and leads you through the material.
Because of this any student who put forth an ounce of effort did very well
in her class.
I also feel that teachers should never stop learning
about their subject, their profession, and themselves. By doing this
their teaching style will always be evolving and improving. When a
teacher is in touch with research that is being done in the educational field
they will be able to better suit there students needs.
