INTASC Principle 8

The teacher understands and uses formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social and physical development of the learner.

I did not fully understand assessment until I enrolled in teaching courses during college.  While I had always had worksheets and tests in school I rarely saw any other forms of assessment. On occasion a teacher would assign for a group project or a paper but that was only on occasion.  Now, however, I see that assessment is just as much for the teacher as it is for the student.  As a teacher it is imperative that I know whether or know not the students understand the material being taught.  If there is no understanding there is no learning.
But I do not believe that assessment is merely something that takes place after a lesson or at the end of a chapter.  Assessment is continuous.  While a lesson is taking place assessment can occur through questioning the students, or listening to group discussions, or asking students to summarize the lesson.  There are a multitude of ways to go about it.  But a teacher must also make sure that their assessment is appropriate for the subject matter.  For instance you are not going to assign a three page paper to see ho well students understand subtraction.  Instead a teacher will assign something similar to what has been done in class.
