INTASC Principle 7

The teacher plans instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, students, the community, and curriculum goals.

There are many variables to be considered when planning a lesson over a subject.  It is always valuable to know what the curriculum goals are.  From that knowledge one can then begin to determine ways in which to provide learning opportunities that support the curriculum goals.  When planning teachers must keep in mind the student’s prior knowledge, the teachers knowledge of the subject matter, as well as the community resources and dispositions about the subject.
The most important aspect in the planning is that a teacher is capable of being flexible with the lesson.  While it is important to have plans on how to present material and provide learning experiences, they are no good if the students are not learning.  Therefore teachers must be ready to slow down or even speed up all based upon the students.
In math classes I always felt like my teachers needed to incorporate this principle into their teaching.  I have a math phobia, I guess you could say, I always have to work really hard to keep up with what is going on in the class and sometimes fell behind because teachers would teach a concept and I would not understand.  As math is all built upon steps and I did not understand one of the steps, everything that was taught after that step/concept was like Greek to me.  I always wanted my teachers to realize that I did not understand and slow down so that I could catch up.
