INTASC Principle 6
The teacher uses knowledge
of effective verbal, nonverbal, and media communication techniques
to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction
in the classroom.
Communication is a key in any relationship including
that between teacher and student. The most obvious form of communicating
in a classroom is teaching a lesson. However a teacher also communicates
many other messages verbally and nonverbally. Some messages that teachers
convey are, approval, encouragement, correction, and many others. It
is important for teachers to encourage students with a smile or even a word
of praise. Or communication can be built into classroom management.
If a student is off task a teacher can simply walk by and tap their desk.
This requires no verbal warning and it calls the student back into the class
with little work.
However, the teacher is not the only on in the classroom
communicating. Every second of everyday students are communicating verbally
and nonverbally. As a teacher is explaining something, the look on the
students faces will tell whether or not they fully understand the information.
Also students will communicate verbally anything from their struggles in the
class or outside the class to how their day was. At which point the
teacher has to be sure to listen closely. If the student is struggling
in the class then by listening the teacher can assist the student in dealing
with the problem. I also believe that it is important to listen just
as responsively when a student is sharing about their day. At that point
relationships are being fostered and by having a relationship with the students
they will be more inclined to feel safe in the class and become more responsive
to classroom activities.
While I do not yet have a vast amount of experience in
this in the classroom I can vouch that outside the classroom people are excited
when you find them important enough to listen to what they have to say.
Students are the same, they respond favorably when teachers take a favorable
interest in them.
Another important resource in education is media communication.
This is continually growing and becoming a larger part of society it should
therefore be incorporated into the classroom so that students can familiarize
themselves with it now. Perhaps media communication will take shape in the
form of using email for class announcements or an online syllabus.
