INTASC Principle 5

The teacher uses an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.

During the middle school and high school years relationships are a large part in student’s lives.  By incorporating group activities into the class a teacher allows for natural development during the class.  During one of my observations I was privileged to observe a class that incorporates group activities on a daily basis.  The teacher will ask a question and then tell the class to discus it with the group. As they are discussing she walks around the classroom to be sure that all groups are on task and that everyone is contributing.
This teacher also understands that sometimes students do not know how to work cooperatively in a group.  On several occasions she has taken time to explain why it is important to allow everyone in the group and how to recognize and use everyone’s strengths to help the group.
This teacher and many others like her are teaching students a subject in a way that complements their development.  They are also teaching them valuable lessons about how to work with others which will prove beneficial as they move through life.
