INTASC Principle 4

The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage students' development of critical thinking, problem solving, and performance skills.

Tell me and I forget.  Show me and I remember.  Involve me and I remember.
            Chinese Proverb

Knowing that all students learn differently, it would make sense for a teacher to use different methods of teaching to accommodate that.  When a teacher uses only one teaching strategy that inadvertently shut students out of the lesson.  On top of that, they prevent some students from reaching their full potential.  By involving different areas of learning such as critical thinking, creative expression, and problem solving students receive the opportunity to gain much more than memorized knowledge.  Instead they have a foundation of information to build upon.
While I can see how beneficial creating a variety of instructional strategies in a class can be I can also see how difficult it could be to come up with a variety of ways to present the material.  I have every desire to use a wide variety of methods for teaching concepts, but I worry sometimes that I wont know what will work well.  There have been many teachers in my career as a students who have been on both sides of this principle There have been many teachers who were not sure of to use a variety of instructional strategies and in their class many of the students just learned straight facts. While there is nothing wrong with memorized  facts, it is just that there is so much more to learning than facts.  When teachers come at education from that philosophy they create opportunities for students to learn valuable skills, like how to think for themselves, or problem solving.  The teachers that I have known to incorporate a variety of instruction strategies have been the ones who have really impacted my life and many others.
