INTASC Principle 10
The teacher fosters
relationships with school colleagues, parents, and agencies
in the larger community to support students' learning and well-being.
'It takes a whole village
to raise a child.' African saying
Many people have said that it takes a village to raise a
child. This is true in education. It takes parents, members of
the community and teachers working together to give students the best education
possible. A teacher who understands this is always going to be attempting
to develop a close relationship with the parents of a student. By developing
a relationship with a student’s parents and discussing the students progress,
struggles, and the goals of the class the parents will be able to take part
in their child’s education.
Also by fostering relationships with members of the
community a teacher opens up opportunities for more hands on experiences
within the community. A cadet teaching course I was involved in during
high school was able to go into other schools in the area and assist in
teaching for a nine week period of time. In order for us to e able
to do this our teacher had to have a good reputation and relationship with
the other schools. Because of this experience my classmates and I received
a lot of hands on learning experience that helped us decide if we really
wanted to be teachers.
Another area of fostering relationships is with other
teachers. In any occupation it is essential to have good relationships
with those you work with. By doing this it creates a better working
environment. However, in education there are other perks to cultivating
relationships with the other employees in the school. One of those
is the ability to mentor one another and discuss teaching methods that have
worked for each other before. I feel that this will be essential as
a first year teacher. To be able to learn from other people’s experience
and advice will be very beneficial. Another way to use these professional
relationships is to work together. Knowledge is not divided into a
bunch of different areas like English and math therefore learning shouldn’t
always be divided into a bunch of different lessons. Teachers can work
cooperatively to create lessons that envelope several different areas.
For example, they could do a section on the renaissance. Many times
history classes cover the renaissance period by themselves but it would be
even more educational to get the English class and math classes together
and each focus on different aspects of the period within their subject.
For instance the English class could focus on the literature of the period.
By doing this students learn the history, math, English, art, all of the
subjects are intertwined and are related to each other.
