INTASC Principle 1Principle #1: The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline(s) he or she teaches and can create learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for students"Knowledge is power."
Francis Brown In the classroom this statement, “knowledge is power,” is most definitely true. By possessing knowledge of the subject matter being taught and teaching methods a teacher has the ability to be confident while in front of the students teaching. When a teacher is sure of themselves it allows the students to believe in their teacher. Even more importantly, when a teacher is knowledgeable about their subject matter they will be more inclined to create meaningful learning experiences that students can relate to their every day lives rather than simply focusing on understanding the material. During high school I was privileged to have and English teacher that had an amazing amount of knowledge about English. Because of her knowledge she was able to construct lessons that were fun and meaningful. On one occasion this teacher asked everyone to bring in their favorite song. After we had brought our song in we would all sit in a circle and listen to the song. Afterward we all analyzed the song. Through this experience my classmates and I learned the skills necessary to analyze poetry and other important pieces of literature. When a teacher truly knows their subject matter they set a foundation for their the rest of their teaching.
