Johnson declared that poverty was the greatest war that is being fought on American soil.  Since then Americans have continued to fight this "war" that affects every aspect of American society.  Moreover, education is one area of society that feels the effects of poverty more strongly than any other.  As of now, there are 15 million children living below the poverty line in the United States alone.  Everyday these students enter classrooms in which the teachers are faced with the challenge of teaching them and encouraging them to learn.  However, there are many obstacles that must be overcome in order for instruction to begin.
