Archaeological Specialist/GPS Specialist, August -November 2002.

Michael Baker, Jr. Inc., Coraopolis, Pennsylvania

I worked as an archaeological specialist on a Phase I archaeological survey for the re-alignment of US 231 in West Lafayette , Indiana .  During the project, I was responsible for GPS mapping and surveying to lay out survey transects, wetland areas, surface survey areas, and rights-of-way, and to perform data collection for future mapping and artifact collection.  For the duration of the project I worked with the GPS and GIS equipment and software daily, which consisted of Trimble Pathfinder systems, including the Pathfinder Pro XR and XRS GPS receiver and antennas, TDC1, TDC2, and TSCe dataloggers, Trimble Pathfinder Office, Trimble Asset Surveyor, and ArvView GIS.  I regularly transferred daily project information between the datalogger and a laptop PC, created project mapping and data files, and coordinated with project supervisors, principal investigators, and mapping specialists for aerial photography, project mapping, and other project-related details.

I contributed to Phase I and II archaeological survey reports, conducted background research, edited report contents, and created graphical figures.  I was responsible for report production and quality control at all stages, including final delivery to the Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Officer for final review and approval.  I supervised a field crew of two to four archaeological technicians, developed field survey strategies, conducted field surveys using state and federal guidelines for archaeological investigations, and recorded the results of field surveys for use in the final reports.  I was also instrumental in introducing a Global Positioning System and associated software to the operation, and training the staff and field crew in its use.
