This site contains an outline of the notes and will be updated throughout the semester with other relevant information for the course.

Course Description:

This course will explore the structure, function and interactions of many types of biological molecules including DNA, RNA and proteins.  Major emphasis will be placed on genes, gene regulation/expression, cell cycle regulation, G proteins and second messenger pathways, apoptosis, oncogenes/proto-oncogenes, cancer and gene therapy.  Laboratory exercises are designed to give practical, hands-on experience and train students in modern molecular techniques that will be useful in future endeavors.

 Course Grading:

Exams #1-3 (100 pts each) 300
Final Exam 100
Lab Notebook    40
Lab Reports (3 reports) 100
       Cell Culture (25 pts)
       Apoptosis (25 pts)
       Western Analysis (50 pts)
Research Term Paper    80

* Class participation and attendance will be considered in final grade determination.

Other Policies:

- It is the student’s responsibility to obtain copies of any information, announcements, assignments, etc. which were missed due to an unexcused absence.

- Excused absences for University-related functions must be arranged in advance.

- In the event of an emergency or illness, please notify me ASAP.

- No make-up exams will be given except with University excuse.

- If you need course adaptations or accommodations because of a disability, if you have emergency medical information to share with me, or if you need special arrangements in case the building must be evacuated, please contact me ASAP.

Lab Notebook:

Along with the lab manual, you are to keep your own detailed, personal lab notebook that will contain extra lab handouts, actual data and any notes that you make.  You should spend time each week updating and organizing, as this notebook will serve as a reference manual in the future.  I will collect your notebook several times (unannounced) during the semester.

Lab Reports:

Each report will be collected approximately one week following the completion of that lab.  You will be asked to answer questions and also summarize/interpret your results/data.  The report will follow the standard journal article format and include Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion sections.  Late lab reports will be docked one letter grade each day late!

Research Paper:

Choose an article from the current scientific literature (within the last 12 months and approved by the instructor) and prepare a 6-7 page review paper.  Topics can include: cell signaling, second messenger pathways, gene regulation/expression, control of translation, cell cycle control, apoptosis and RNAi.  Summarize the paper describing the problem addressed, results, conclusions, your opinion on the significance of the problem and reference at least 5 other recent (no more than 2-3 yrs old) research papers as support and for background.  Do not plagiarize!  Cite your references properly and write this in your own words.  Also, you will be required to turn in a copy of the paper with your review.

If you need course adaptations or accommodations because of a disability, if you have emergency medical information to share with me, or if you need special arrangements in case the building must be evacuated, please contact me ASAP.
