Definition Examples Implications Some Thoughts Connections Predictions

The compression of data can best be summed up by comparing it to really rapid weight loss. All that was is the beginning is still there, its just placed in a smaller package.

Definition:

"The process of reducing the information content of a signal, or the data size of a file so that it occupies less space on a transmission channel or storage device." http://www.techdictionary.com/

Examples:

"Winzip 8.1 brings the convenience of Windows to the use of Zip files and other compression formats. The optional wizard interface makes zipping and unzipping easier than ever!"

http://www.winzip.com

"Zip files are "archives" used for distributing and storing files. Zip files contain one or more files. Usually the files "archived" in a Zip are compressed to save space. Zip files make it easy to group files and make transporting and copying these files faster."

"WinZip features built-in support for CAB files and for popular Internet file formats such as TAR, gzip, UUencode, BinHex, and MIME. ARJ, LZH, and ARC files are supported via external programs. WinZip interfaces to most virus scanners. Winzip is manufactured by Winzip Computing, Inc.1991-2001."

Winzip costs $29.00 for single- user licensing. Prices vary for multi-user licensing. See Winzip.com.

"DVD looks like a standard compact disc, but with much greater storage capacity, holding up to seven times the information of a compact disc. Storage capacity is increased due to the ability to digitally compress and house video and audio data into smaller and more densely positioned pits on the surface of a disc. There are three types of DVD discs: DVD-5 holding 4.7 gigabytes of data with content on one side of the disc; DVD-9 holding 8.5 gigabytes of information; DVD-10 storing 9.4 gigabytes with information on both sides of the disc. Dual layer DVD-9 permits for two layers of information on one side of the disc." http://www.dvddemystified.com

Some of the features of DVDs include the following: freezing the screen, slow motion, watching screen by screen, fast forwarding, scanning, your choice of camera angles, Dolby digital sound, language choices, parental lock, and zooming.

DVDs are manufactured by many companies, such as Sony, Apex Digital Inc., Harman International, Lenoxx Electronics Corp., Micron Electronics Inc., nVidia Corporation. For a complete listing see www.macromedia.com.

"DVDs are for home entertainment. Other uses of DVD-Video include reference materials, promotional pieces for businesses, and supplemental programming at art museums, to name a few." www-rcf.usc.edu/

The cost of DVDs range from $4.99 up to over $20.00 depending on the quality of the DVD and the material on it.

Implications:

Some thoughts:

Advantages of compression from a consumer point of view:
Quick transfer of files, music, and movies
No need to buy larger hard drives
Can compress data to fit on smaller hard drive

Disadvantages of compression from a consumer point of view:
Purchasing new products to keep up with the compression of information

Obstacles:
New algorithms are needed to continue making data able to be compressed into smaller and smaller forms.
Top music, movie, and software companies will attempt to encrypt data so that it cannot be compressed or copied and distributed to the masses for free

To overcome obstacles:
Coders will have to develop new algorithms to further compress data
Coders and hackers will crack through movie, music, and software companies encrypted codes to continue delivering the free copies of their products through file-sharing

Connections:

Compression is a key component of most of the trends because data being compressed into smaller forms makes all of these possible in a more efficient way.

Broadband is affected by compression because it carries voice, data, and video channels all at once; so if the information was condensed it could send even more information simultaneously.

Digital convergence is aided by compression because it makes the information that the numerous industries and several devices transfer can be exchanged faster.

Portability and Mobility are assisted by compression because they enable information to take up smaller space so the many gadgets that need to access services on the go can have smaller storage and be smaller physically to be more efficiently transported.

Thanks to compression, Multimedia has soared on the Internet, CD's are compressed into song or files in MP3 formats that a person can download in less than a minute on a T connection and less than 10 minutes on a dial-up giving many people an experience in a type of music they may not have been exposed to before.

Personalization gains assistance from compression in PDAs, these personalized devices have lower storage space than desktop PCs and due to compression more data and information can be held on these devices.

Miniaturization is closely related to compression because PDAs (palm pilots), and laptops generally have lower storage space then a PC and thanks to compression you can compress and fit more data on these than before making it easier to carry your important data everywhere.

Predictions:

Compression will be a substantial part of technology as products become smaller, more efficient and better products overall.
