Perspectives on Faith:
A Web Site for Inquiry about Religion

Comparative Sites

These are links that focus on providing access to a wide range of different religions' web sites. They are excellent starting points for further exploration.

Good non-electronic references for the comparative study of religion include the following:

The Eliade Guide to World Religions, Mircea Eliade and Ioan P. Couliano, Editors (Harper SanFrancisco, 1991)--combines a "Macro-Dictionary" with surveys of 33 religions and a "Micro-Dictionary" with shorter entries and cross references to the Macro-Dictionary

The Encyclopedia of Religion, Mircea Eliade, Editor (Macmillan, 1987)--exhaustive multi-volume work with an extremely thorough index; the reference standard in this field

The HarperCollins Dictionary of Religion, General Editor Jonathan Z. Smith (HarperSanFrancisco, 1995)--one volume reference combines a dictionary format with relatively short entries with longer feature essays

There are several volumes of comparative scripture in addition to Paragon's World Scriptures.  Frederick M. Denney and Rodney L. Taylor are the editors for The Holy Book in Comparative Perspective (University of Southern California Press, 1985), a collection of essays on the roles and views of scripture and sacred writing in several different religions.

An Anthology of Sacred Texts by and about Women, edited by Serinity Young (Crossroad, 1994) picks up this lesser-known thread of scriptural study.

Another major anthology is Sacred Texts of the World:  A Universal Anthology, Ninian Smart and Richard D. Hecht, Editors (Crossroad Publications, 1982).  This one is organized first by religion, and then topically with a series of categories that repeats for each religion.
