  Religious Studies: The Making of a Discipline,  Walter H. Capps (Fortress Press, 1995): Capps' book is lucid and well-written. It's the "first full-scale introduction to the history and methods of the study of religion." Capps is a well-known scholar in the field. Highly recommended.
